Morey Evans Introduces Urban Teen Students To Ad Business
Morey Evans Advertising recently launched a corporate immersion program working with
students from Denver-based Charter Public School, PS1 High School. The program, called "PS1
Voices," is designed to teach urban high school students about marketing and advertising
communications.
In early January, twelve students were selected, based on teacher recommendations, to
participate in this first-of-its-kind program. The group includes an ethnically diverse mix of
sophomores and juniors. Together, they form their own "ad agency" that functions in
partnership with Morey Evans.
The program introduces students to agency department functions, job responsibilities and the
research, planning and executional processes required to develop an actual advertising
campaign. Classes are taught by Morey Evans volunteers.
The students learn by doing, conducting focus groups, defining strategies and messaging
platforms, and developing creative ideas that culminate with the production of professionally
produced 60-second television public service announcements.
The commercials focus on perceptions and misperceptions of teens and teen issues, such as
pregnancy, violence, stereotypes, self-esteem, peer pressure and related issues.
A final presentation of the ready-to-air TV spots will be presented to Denver Mayor
Hickenlooper on March 9. The spots are to be broadcast on KUSA 9News, Denver's local NBC
affiliate, throughout April and May.
"As a charter school we've worked hard to create a structure within our school system where
we utilize the city as our class room," stated Robin Russel, PS1 Teacher and sponsor of
PS1Voices. "We're a non-traditional school that seeks out hands-on experiences so the
students learn while actually doing."
While not atypical for PS1, such a hands-on approach to education is far from the daily routine
for an advertising agency, according to Morey Evans President, Glenn Morey.
"This is the first time we've ever done anything like this," states Morey. "We've been able to
pull together a successful pilot program that we feel will serve as a terrific launching pad for
other agencies engaging in similar programs."
Both PS1 and the agency anticipate the experience will help students walk away with a
stronger sense of self-actualization, as well as making them better informed about career
choices within the advertising industry and introducing them into a business environment
where they begin to form long-term relationships with business leaders.
Morey Evans, Denver-based post-production company, Base2, and individual members of the
local film community have donated their time and resources to the program.
